Tops Cleaning System with Rotary Brush [TCS]

A continuous flat-foundation cleaning system that prevents micro-dust, seed coat, and fibre residue accumulation on card flats β€” stabilising carding behaviour and reducing manual flat maintenance.

  • Keeps the Flat Tops Clean
  • Compressed Air Cleaning Is not required frequently
  • Works 24 x 7 x 365 days
  • Driven From Cylinder
Frequency Continuous
Type Brush Roller
Drive From Cylinder

Flat Foundation Cleaning System

Flat tops play a critical role in carding quality, but during normal operation they are continuously exposed to micro-dust, seed coats, short fibres, husk particles, and β€” in synthetic processing β€” titanium dioxide deposits.

When residue accumulates on the flat foundation, it introduces secondary problems that are often misdiagnosed: unstable cleaning efficiency, increased nep generation, inconsistent waste rejection, and higher load on other carding elements.

Conventional flat cleaning relies on manual stripping or compressed air. These methods are intermittent, labour-intensive, and inherently inconsistent, resulting in fluctuating flat cleanliness across the running shift.

System Concept

The Clean Flat Foundation Cleaning System provides continuous, controlled cleaning of flat foundations during machine operation, ensuring flats are always presented to the carding zone in a clean and stable condition.

The system is based on a rotary brush roller assembly designed to operate without disturbing flat wire points or carding geometry.

Brush Construction

  • Imported natural bristles for effective removal of micro-dust and fine residue
  • Metallic fillet rows for controlled removal of seed coats, husk particles, and embedded contaminants

This dual-action cleaning approach allows effective operation across cotton, polyester, and blended fibre processes, including removal of titanium dioxide deposits common in synthetic fibres.

Why Continuous Cleaning Matters

  • Prevents progressive dust and fibre build-up on flat foundations
  • Stabilises waste rejection behaviour over long running periods
  • Reduces nep generation caused by contaminated flat surfaces
  • Minimises dependence on compressed air and manual stripping
  • Reduces stress on flat cleaning components and flat clothing

Execution Philosophy

This system is supplied as a machine-specific conversion, evaluated against the existing flat arrangement, drive layout, and operating conditions of the card.

It is executed as a behaviour-stabilising upgrade, not as a cosmetic attachment. Machine make, model, and observed issues are reviewed through a technical RFQ to ensure correct integration and long-term reliability.

Why is there a need to have this system?

During production, fibre condition, raw material mix, and pre-opening variation can cause microdust to accumulate on the tops foundation. If those embedments are not cleared, the rocking motion of the tops needles is affected. Compressed-air cleaning only shifts the dust around the card and department, adds labour dependency, and can even damage needles if moisture-laden air is used. This system provides a continuous safety fallback that keeps the tops foundation clean and preserves consistent tops behaviour.

What is the construction of the Tops Cleaning System?

The unit uses a spiral brush together with a cleaning fillet. The fillet acts as a fallback where pre-cleaning correction is needed, while the brush penetrates the foundation and continuously cleans it. The assembly is driven from the cylinder at slow speed, so power consumption is negligible compared to compressed-air usage and manual cleaning effort. Vaamana builds the unit using seasoned wood and laser-cut components for durable service life.

What are the advantages of this system?

It extends the life of expensive flat tops, preserves consistent needle behaviour, reduces manual cleaning effort, and avoids spreading microdust around the department. It also removes the risk of corrosion caused by accidental water condensation in compressed air. The system is simple, robust, and low-maintenance, with only the two fillets normally requiring replacement as they wear. For mills processing different fibres, it acts as an essential protection and process-stability mechanism.
